There's more to learning to drive than just the practical lessons, here it is!
If you know someone who's willing to take you out to practise, go for it! Remember though that they have to be over 21, they must have held a UK driving license for 3 years. Do make sure to get plenty of lessons too, lessons will stop bad habits developing, which is essential for your learning. Experienced drivers that haven't trained properly as driving instructors can pass on bad habits if you don't get regular lessons.
The theory test is mainly about the highway code, but you don't have to run to you local bookstore to find it! The official highway code is available here at the Governments direct gov website.
You can book both your theory and practical online. The DSA (Driving Standards Agency) has a page here.
Pass plus can let you save money. Your first year's insurance can be the most expensive. Pass plus is a scheme set up in 1995 to make new drivers safer by teaching them town driving, night driving, all weather driving, country roads, dual carriageways and motorways. 16 insurers currently back the scheme (including Directline and Norwich Union) offering up to 40% off. You won't even need to take a test at the end. The pass plus website has some case studies. These show how much people using Pass plus have saved.
